How do I determine what needs to be inspected?
In general, inspect any place where sensitive information can be heard, seen, or intercepted.
Resist the urge to check every last inch of your suspect area. Although normal and instinctive, this approach does not use our talents efficiently, and is not cost-effective.
Generate a priority list
Start with the most sensitive areas first. Usually you will find that If they have not attacked these areas, then the rest of the areas are likely safe. With this approach, you will spend less, and you can move more quickly to addressing other possible reasons for concern.
Include these items in your list...
- All sensitive areas.
- Adjacent areas if sounds from sensitive areas may be heard there too.
- All communications equipment within both types of areas.
(phones, speakerphones, video teleconferencing, faxes, modems, LANs, etc.)
- Communications equipment used for sensitive matters located anywhere.
- Other equipment which handle sensitive printed materials. (photocopiers, scanners, A/V equipment, etc.)
- Telephone rooms, wire closets, and junction boxes.
- Vehicles (cars, planes, boats, etc.).
- Meeting locations.
- Corporate offices, apartments, or suites.
- Executives' home offices.
- Any other sensitive item or area unique to your business.
In sensitive areas, both the area and all communications equipment must be inspected.
In adjacent areas, both the area and all communications equipment should be inspected.
In some rare occasions, communications items can be inspected without inspecting the areas. The reverse, however, is never true.
